What are headaches?
Headaches are a common problem and one that we often encounter in our practice. There are many types of headaches, and they can affect many of our everyday activities.
Two of the most common types of headaches are tension headaches and migraines.
Common types of headaches
A tension headache is due to tight muscles in your shoulders, neck, scalp and jaw. This can be caused by general stress, psychiatric factors, depression or anxiety.
Tension headaches occur when you over-work without breaks, don’t get enough sleep and skip meals.
Head pain usually originates from the cervical spine near the back of the head and may radiate to the forehead, temples, ears and eye area. The pain may be aggravated by neck movements or sustained postures.
A migraine is a throbbing pain normally on one side of the head. When someone experiences a migraine, they are most likely to be sensitive to light and sound. A migraine can also cause a person to feel ill and may cause vomiting. Migraines are more common in women than in men.
